Mets third baseman David Wright will return to baseball activity in the next day or two and start swinging a bat, field grounders, and perhaps start throwing as well, GM Sandy Alderson told reporters on Tuesday.
Wright had resumed a throwing program 10 days ago, but was then shut down because of lower-back discomfort. Alderson downplayed the back issue and said it was not a concern.
“I am realistically expecting to see him this year. I don’t have any real way of projecting a timetable. I think we’re going to be patient about that,” Alderson said. “But we certainly haven’t given up hope of seeing him here in 2017 by any means.”
Wright, 34, has been limited to just 75 regular season games during the past two seasons. He as four years and $67 million remaining on his current contract.
While it’s nice to see Wright beginning some baseball activities again, there is still no timetable for his return, and it will be a while until we see him on the field again.
