LHP Andrew Heaney (0-0, 6.00 ERA) vs. LHP Joe Mantiply (2-0, 4.26)

The Rangers took Game 3 of the 2023 World Series on Monday night. It was a 3-1 that was highlighted less by the production and more by the injuries that came from it.

Starter Max Scherzer got hurt again—his second time with the Rangers—leaving the game after three innings with back tightness. Then in the top of the eighth, Rangers slugger Adolis Garcia seemed to hurt his oblique on a fly out that ended the inning.

By the time both of the Rangers’ injuries occurred, the team was up 3-0—and maintained a lead despite a couple of late-inning threats by the D’backs. But with it still early in the series, the Garcia injury could loom large.

He was slashing .323/.382/.726/1.108 and hit eight homers with 22 RBIs over 68 plate appearances this postseason. He’s won multiple games for the Rangers on his own.

In Game 4, both teams will use starters on extremely short leashes.

Andrew Heaney and Joe Mantiply—both lefties—aren’t expected to throw more a couple of innings. Both have pitched in relief over the last week-and-a-half, and neither has thrown more than 3.2 innings in an appearance this postseason.

The Diamondbacks are preparing for a bullpen game.
