The Mets defense behind the plate has suffered yet again this season with Wilson Ramos, who ranks 86th among 103 catchers in MLB with -4.7 FRAA (fielding runs above average) and 79th among catchers in framing runs at -2.0.

On top of that, he had registered a 4.52 ERA this season behind the dish. Mike Puma of the New York Post spoke with Mickey Callaway and Jacob deGrom who were both impressed by his play recently, though.

“Ramos has a huge impact on our offense and it’s undoubtedly so that he’s been catching great games since the All-Star break,” Callaway said. “He’s making a lot of adjustments, he’s stealing a lot of strikes, even balls down in the zone. I think we’re at the point where Nido is going to spell him to keep him healthy and we are really going to rely on Ramos to do the bulk of the catching.”

The importance of the Tomas Nido reference was that it appeared for awhile that both deGrom and Noah Syndergaard wanted to have him as their personal catchers, looking much more comfortable when paired with him as compared to Ramos.

However, both pitchers were caught by Ramos this past weekend, and neither had much of a reason to complain as they combined for 12 innings and only two earned runs (five total runs) allowed against the Washington Nationals.

“I have thrown the ball really well to him, that has been going on for quite a while now,” deGrom said. “There’s a little learning curve. This is the first year of him catching us, kind of knowing our game plan and me and him have been on the same page since I have been throwing to him and just talking to him more, him going over the hitters a little more and I think him getting more comfortable with what our staff does as well.”

Given that the Mets invested $19 million over the next two seasons in Ramos, the team will be hoping for continued rapport between the catcher and his pitching staff as they try to earn a playoff spot down the stretch.

Offensively, the 32-year-old is hitting .270/.341/.413 with 13 home runs and 59 RBI to give himself a 101 OPS+ and 1.2 bWAR this season.

Ramos has been hitting better over the last 15 games he’s played as well, hitting .321/.367/.571 with four home runs and 15 RBI in that span.
