Will Venable, currently the associate manager of the Texas Rangers, declined a request to interview with the Mets for their available managerial opening, according to a New York Post report.

“I talked to (the Mets) very briefly, but that was at the point where I already had made the decision that I was staying here,” Venable told The Post before game 5 of the ALCS.

It was previously reported by multiple outlets that Venable would likely decline any interview requests this offseason. The San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Angels are looking for a new manager as well.

Venable, in his first season on the Texas coaching staff, played nine seasons in the major leagues, from 2008-2016, with the Padres, Rangers, and Dodgers. His career slash line was .249/.315/.404 in 967 games.

He served as a first and third base coach with the Cubs from 2018-2020. From 2021-2022, Venable was the Red Sox bench coach and amassed a 1-5 record as interim manager in 2022 when Alex Cora was diagnosed with COVID-19.

To this point, there have been no known interviews for the Mets managerial opening, and the only new names we’ve heard linked are Blue Jays first base coach Mark Budzinski and Brewers manager Craig Counsell. It has been reported that the Mets will not make an internal hire for their next manager.
