Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that the New York Mets are expected to hire someone outside the organization to replace the open managerial position, following the firing of Buck Showalter

In the article, Sammon notes how the Mets are still in the beginning stages of replacing Showalter, which leaves a lot of unknowns in their search for a manager. It is still unknown whether or not the Mets have interviewed any external candidates, and new president of baseball operations David Stearns refuses to give a timeline on said search.

The news that the Mets are ruling out any internal options crosses out many names and leaves many positions within the organization in limbo. Firstly, one of the bigger candidates that is ruled out is Carlos Beltrán, who returned to New York as a special assistant in the front office this past year. Along with him, other names like Joey Cora and Eric Chavez are taken off the board; this report particularly affects the Mets coaching staff as first and third base coaches Wayne Kirby and Joey Cora’s contracts reportedly have expired. This is magnified as it is expected that whoever takes over the Mets managerial gig will get near full reign over the coaching staff.

The one widely known candidate to this point is Craig Counsell. The former Brewers manager is technically a free agent, but Milwaukee is not allowing him to talk to teams until his contract officially ends on Oct. 31.
