Remember the good ‘ole days when the New York Mets had “The Best Infield Ever” as described by a cover on Sports Illustrated?

Remember who made up that infield?

John Olerud, 1B; Edgardo Alfonzo, 2B; Rey Ordóñez, SS; and Robin Ventura, 3B. No other team could compete with that. The combination of number 13 and number 10 alone was incredible.

How about bringing back some of that stellar defense with Fonzi? At 35 years of age, it is not a bad idea.

Rumors are spreading he wants to come back to the majors and he is drawing interest, but only for a minor league deal.

Currently he is playing for the Venezuelan winter league and is hitting .322 with 42 RBI’s. His slugging numbers are .483 and an on-base percentage of .383. Those numbers are from 60 games.

He would give Jerry Manuel a chance to rest Luis Castillo and have Alex Cora, who plays shortstop, play for Jose Reyes. This way both Castillo and Reyes can stay fresh throughout the season, though I’m not sure if that is possible for Castillo.

I, for one, would love to see some stellar defense in that infield. I’m sick of watching balls that should be caught go by Castillo. Fonzi could bring that back.

Plus, it would be nice to see Fonzi retire as a member of the New York Mets.
