scherzer

The White Sox may be open to trying to keep All-Star Max Scherzer in the AL Central, writes Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. as they look to add a “top” right-handed starter.

“The White Sox are in the market for a veteran right-handed starter, and with some payroll flexibility remaining after two key moves, they appear to at least be considering even the top guys — Max Scherzer, James Shields and Ervin Santana, plus trade possibilities such as Jeff Samardzija and others.”

Heyman believes the White Sox are a long shot for Scherzer which may have them look at other available veteran starters. Their goal is to go into 2015 with a formidable 1-2 punch along with ace Chris Sale.

If they look to the trade route, unless the Mets are willing to deal Matt Harvey or Jacob deGrom (which they’re not), they don’t seem to have the caliber of pitchers the White Sox are looking for. The Mets are more focused on moving one of their 4-5 type starters in Gee, Niese and Colon.

Other top right-handed starters who could interest them are the Reds’ Johnny Cueto or Mat Latos, or the Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann, writes Heyman.

The White Sox have been fielding offers on shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who’s of interest to the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets, but are not actively shopping him according to GM Rick Hahn.

In the end I feel Alexei remains in Chicago, and if they fail to sign Scherzer they’ll aggressively pursue and eventually sign one of Santana, Samardzija or Shields.
