A Mets person suggested to David Lennon of Newsday that top prospect Zack Wheeler will be in the Mets rotation before the All Star break. Certainly good news, and now it’s up to Zack Wheeler to make it happen.
When he was last seen in Triple-A Buffalo, Wheeler made only six starts and went 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP after posting solid numbers in Binghamton. In 33 innings pitched he walked 16 and struck out 33 batters.
Wheeler needs a little more simmering, especially in the control and command department. He’s gotten better in terms of an improved walk rate, but it’s still too high and he needs to lower that before he faces real major leaguers who will just wait him out and launch his fastball over the wall.
The good news about the move to Las Vegas is that because of the park effects, you get see what his numbers would translate like in the majors, so I’m looking forward to seeing that.
One thing though… I find it interesting that on a cold day in mid-November, a Mets source would just throw that out there?
