I don’t care if your ten games ahead or ten games back, that feeling of sheer tenacity, that feeling of bravado, that feeling of invincibility, are all ever so prevalent after an incredible adrenaline-pumping victory like the one that played out on Saturday night at Citi Field.
Comebacks in general are always satisfying and can lift you emotionally like few things can in sports. But a five run comeback capped by a dramatic walk-off home run in the ninth? Well that’s the stuff of legend fueled by equal doses of incredulity and euphoric magic. There’s nothing else like it in baseball.
Once again, Wilmer Flores was cast in the role of the unlikely hero, the Ulysses of our time, faced with insurmountable challenges, but always prevailing in those moments when he’s needed the most.
Given the current circumstances of the Mets, a team most of us have resigned to being sellers at the deadline, a victory like last night’s can have all of us suddenly recalculating our chances for October baseball. Is it conceivable? Is it realistically possible? Why not… After all, its still within the mathematical construct, and last I checked – we ain’t dead yet.
If the Mets can win four games in a row – even in its current weakened state without their hard-throwing ace and their shutdown closer – who’s to say they can’t win eight in a row and suddenly find themselves in the throes of a legitimate, bona fide, honest to goodness wild card race?
That’s not to say it will happen, but only to remind you that it can, and that as Mets fans we’ve seen it all before. So keep on watching, and keep on hoping, but most of all – keep on believing. That last part should come easy for all of us, after all it’s in our DNA.
