Tylor Megill looked strong on Sunday, collecting his second win of the season. He threw five innings, giving up just two earned runs on one hit while walking three and striking out five. He threw 82 pitches (51 strikes) in the Mets’ 9-4 win over the Nationals at Citi Field.

The one hit Megill allowed on Sunday was a two-run home run to Josh Bell that hit the batter’s eye in center field in the fourth inning with one on and one out. Prior to taking the bump for that frame, Megill had not allowed a hit and walked just one in the first inning. He retired 10 of the first 12 batters he faced before Bell hit that long homer off him, which enabled the Nats to take a brief lead before New York re-took it for good in the bottom half of the inning.

One of the keys to Megill having a good outing against the Nats involved his ability to repeat his release point. Here’s a look at how similar his fastball and slider appeared as part of a two-pitch sequence.

Now, that is nasty.

Not only did Megill throw well, but he was alive with his bat too, collecting a hit against Washington. MMO’s Mathew Brownstein noted that the hurler is the ninth different Mets pitcher to collect five or more hits in his first 13 career games. He joins some pretty good company after accomplishing this feat, too. Here’s a clip of his seeing-eye single:

The young right-hander endured a rough performance his last time out on August 24 against the San Francisco Giants, as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work. So, being able to bounce back on Sunday with this kind of outing was huge for him. He earned the victory as New York was victorious in the rubber game of the series, improving his personal record to 2-3 to go along with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP through 64 2/3 innings this season.
