Last night was just another game that was too difficult to watch, and in fact I was overcome with sleep for the last inning. The Mets lost to the Dodgers 9-1, and the game was as ugly as the score would indicate.

Just as they had in their previous five contests, the Mets jumped out with an early lead after scratching out a run in the first inning, and then failed to score again for the rest of the game. In the meantime, the Dodgers proceeded to score almost at will, and were even given a few runs due to more Mets errors and misplays. It was a brutal display of how NOT to play the game of baseball. It was a total breakdown on all aspects of their game from starting pitching to relief pitching, and from offense to defense.

Jorge Sosa, simply didn’t have it. After cruising along for four solid innings, total carnage overtook him in the 5th inning and before the 6th inning ended, he was out of the game after allowing 6 earned runs on 8 hits, with only one strike out.

Pedro Feliciano also got tagged for a run, as did Billy Wagner who got hit up for two runs. The bullpen is overworked, and imploding.

Aside from golden boy, David Wright, the offense just wasn’t there during this series.

They have forgotten how to manufacture runs. (Only 5 runs in the 3 game series)
They have forgotten how to draw a walk. (2 walks in their last 5 games)
They swing at bad pitches. (42 strike outs in the last 5 games)
They can’t make the plays. (5 errors in the series)
The bullpen can’t hold a lead. (5 straight losses after the Mets get an early lead)

Carlos Delgado was hitless in four at-bats with two strike outs and he hit into a double play. In the series he left nine men on base.

Carlos Beltran is batting .171 (6-for-35) with as many strikeouts as hits this month.

Willie Randolph continues to call this horrendous slump "an early season test", but I’m not buying it. If this is a test are the Mets passing or failing? Judging from the looks on their faces last night, I would presume the latter.

David Wright is the only Mets who is not stinking up the joint right now. "Thank God for the off day so we can relax and get this out of our minds," Wright said.

They have now lost five straight games, nine of their last ten, and they are 2-10 in June. They are 11-17 against teams that are over .500 this season.

The Phillies are now only 2 games back, they moved into a second-place tie with the Braves yesterday and both teams trail by only two games.

After a day off today, we head into Yankee Stadium to play the hottest team in all of baseball.

It may have been Billy Wagner who said it best last night.

“I’m sure Omar didn’t put this team together expecting this type of play,” Billy Wagner said. “Fred Wilpon, he didn’t shell out this type of money for us to go out and play like this.”

"When we come to Yankee Stadium," he said, "we better be ready to go, because the Yankees aren’t going to feel sorry for us. They’re going to be trying to embarrass us some more."

Well said Sandman, well said…
