While full squad workouts are less than a month away, there are still a number of quality free agents available, including six of MLB Trade Rumors‘ top 20 free agents for this offseason.

Let’s take a look at the top players in each position still left on the market.

Position Players

  • C Gary Sánchez – The veteran catcher went on to hit 19 home runs for the Padres last season after a very brief stint with the Mets. Curt Casali and Yasmani Grandal are available, too.
  • 1B Carlos SantanaThe 37-year-old posted a 2.7 bWAR between the Brewers and Pirates last season. C.J. Cron, Joey Votto, Dominic Smith, and Wil Myers are currently on the market as well.
  • 2B Donovan Solano – Five straight solid years (110 OPS+ overall), and he can play all over the field. Adam Frazier, Kolten Wong, and speedster Tony Kemp are available.
  • SS  Tim Anderson – The two-time All-Star was bad in 2023 with a 60 OPS+. Former Met Amed Rosario is among the better options still out there. Veterans Brandon Crawford and Nick Ahmed are free agents as well.
  • 3B Matt Chapman – It’s been a quiet market for the two-time Platinum Glove Award winner. Gio Urshela, Eduardo Escobar, and Evan Longoria remain on the market.
  • Utility Whit Merrifield – The veteran played mostly second base and corner outfielder for the Blue Jays last season while stealing 26 bases. The versatile Hanser Alberto logged innings as a pitcher for the third straight season. Kiké Hernández has just a 75 OPS+ over the last two seasons.
  • OF Cody Bellinger – The prized position player left on the market had a resurgence in 2023 with a 133 OPS+ with the Cubs.
  • OF Tommy PhamThe former Met finished with 16 home runs and 22 stolen bases between New York and Arizona last season.
  • OF Adam Duvall – Despite missing time with injury, the 35-year-old hit 21 home runs in only 320 at-bats for the Red Sox last year. Eddie Rosario (21 HR last year), Joc Pederson (111 OPS+), and Travis Jankowski (19 SB) are coming off solid seasons.
  • DH Jorge Soler – The 31-year-old did play 32 games in right field last year, but he’s mostly a DH. He had 60 extra-base hits (24 2B and 36 HR) for the Marlins in 2023. The strong DH class still includes J.D. Martinez (33 HR in 2023), Justin Turner (114 OPS+), and Daniel Vogelbach.

Starting Pitching

The DH market feels like the one to watch for the Mets; there have been reports back and forth this offseason about whether they will sign someone external for the position. They could decide to bring in Turner, Solano, or another player who has versatility, including the ability to step in at third base if Brett Baty falters.

  • LHP Blake Snell – The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner is still on the board.
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery – The 31-year-old posted a 3.20 ERA overall in 2023 and played a key role in the Rangers championship run.
  • RHP Brandon Woodruff – The former Brewers posted a 2.28 ERA in 11 starts but ultimately needed surgery that could keep him out for the 2024 season.
  • RHP Michael Lorenzen – The former first-round pick posted a 4.19 ERA in 153 innings between the Tigers and Phillies last season and tossed a no-hitter.
  • LHP Clayton Kershaw – The veteran lefty was still quite good in 2023 (2.46 ERA), but had shoulder surgery that could keep him out of the 2024 first half.
  • SP – Rest of the group includes LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu, RHP Mike Clevinger, RHP Zack Greinke, LHP Dick Mountain, LHP Alex Wood, and RHP Noah Syndergaard.

The Mets have acquired multiple starters already this offseason in Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Adrian Houser.

Relievers

The Mets should certainly dip back into the reliever market at least once to help get the ball to Edwin Díaz.
