MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a deal with free agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, pending a physical.

Cabrera, 29, batted .229/.312/.389 with five home runs for the Nationals, and .241 with 14 home runs and a .694 OPS overall this season between the Nats and Indians.

Though primarily a shortstop, teams were considering Cabrera mostly as a second or third baseman according to some reports.

The Mets had tepid interest in Cabrera, but there were legitimate concerns about his defense, according to what a source told Newsday’s Marc Carig.

Joel Sherman is saying it’s a one year deal for $8 million dollars, a steep drop from the three years and $30 million he was projected to get.

The signing could now make shortstop Yunel Escobar expendable and very available, but the Mets don’t see Escobar as a fit, a team source told Mike Puma.
