According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets have signed Pedro Payano to a minor-league deal.

Payano represents the third starter the Mets have signed in the last day and a half. He made his Major-League debut in 2019, pitching six games for the Texas Rangers.

The right-hander spent the majority of the season with the Rangers Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, pitching to a 4.93 ERA over 18 starts with a 10.0 K/9 and a 4.9 BB/9.

He’s spent the winter with Phil Regan‘s Toros del Este, posting a 7.71 ERA over five games.
Payano has a four-pitch mix. His sinker sits in the low-to-mid 90s while his slider and change-up average 84 and 83 mph, respectively.

MetsMerizedOnline‘s own Jacob Resnick notes Payano’s impressive curveball. Additionally, Mathew Brownstein tweeted out Payano’s curveball was in the 84th percentile in spin rate.

Payano will provide some upper-level rotation depth to a system that’s seen many of its starters leave the organization this winter.

The Toros del Este handed the Leones their first loss of the season thanks to a four run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning off of relievers Dalbert Siri and Adonis Uceta. Siri was called on to maintain the Leones 6-2 lead at the time but he allowed a run to score a single, HBP, and two walks, leaving the bases loaded with two outs for Uceta. Working back-to-back days for only the second time all year, Uceta was saddled with the blown save as he allowed all three inherited runners to score on walk and a two run single to tie the game up at 6-6.

On the other side of the field, Tim Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth and tenth innings while racking up three strikouts to keep the game tied at six. The Toros would walk it off on an RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to get Peterson his first win of the LIDOM season.

It wasn’t Humphreys’ most efficient outing, but, he did continue his strong AFL season with another two innings of scoreless work in the sixth and seventh innings of this game. Sitting between 92-94mph with his fastball, Humphreys threw only 18 of his 36 pitches for strikes (50%) but generated five swinging strikes (13.9% SwStr) leading to three swinging strikeouts.

Offensively, Gimenez had himself a rare “off” night as he grounded out twice and struck out twice. Meanwhile, after a solid start to the AFL season as a rotational starter, Mazeika has been struggling mightily as an everyday player since Joey Bart sustained a fractured thumb.
The LIDOM is a hyper-competitive league with very little tolerance for under-performing players in each team’s pursuit for a championship and a spot in the Caribbean World Series. Rymer Liriano seems to have already lost his hold on a starting outfield job and Alcantara doesn’t seem to be too far behind with another 0-for performance.

Toros del Este (1-5) 6, Estrellas de Oriente (1-5) 3 Box Score

After spending the first week of the season on the sidelines, Peterson made his LIDOM season debut last night in the ninth inning with a 6-2 lead. After getting the first two batters out with relative ease, he allowed a two-out triple to Lewin Diaz who then scored on a playable ground ball to second base that Alen Hanson got a poor read on to cut the lead to 6-3. Peterson would bounce back though getting Socrates Brito to chase a 2-2 fastball up in the zone for the strikeout.

As per a team announcement, the New York Mets have made a handful of roster moves ahead of Friday night’s series opener in Kansas City.

Right-hander Paul Sewald has been selected from Syracuse, righty Drew Gagnon has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, and right-hander Tim Peterson has been designated for assignment.

Sewald, 29, has allowed three earned runs over four appearances (seven innings) with New York this season, striking out four and walking two. Over 41 appearances with Syracuse (51 innings), he owns a 3.35 ERA with 52 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Gagnon, also 29, was recalled from Triple-A earlier in the week and threw a perfect inning in relief against the Braves on Tuesday before allowing five earned runs over an inning-and-a-third in Thursday’s 10-8 win over Atlanta.

Over 17 appearances for the Mets this season (22.2 innings), Gagnon has an 8.74 ERA with 16 strikeouts and seven walks. Through 12 starts for Triple-A Syracuse this season (71 innings), the California native owns a 2.15 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Peterson, 28, has pitched to a 3.09 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 12 walks over 35 appearances (46.2 innings) for Syracuse this season but has allowed four runs over 7.1 innings (six appearances) with the Mets in 2019.

We’ll keep you updated with any additional information as it becomes available.

The New York Mets have acquired right-hander Brooks Pounders from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. Pounders will be available tonight and wear uniform No. 46.

Pounders, 28, has appeared in 24 games with Triple-A Columbus this year, going 2-1 with one save and a 2.31 ERA in 35.0 innings with 11 walks and 46 strikeouts. Opponents were hitting .161 against him.

He has appeared in 38 career major league games with the Royals, Angels and Rockies going 3-2 with an 8.92 ERA and 1.962 WHIP in 38.1 innings with 10 walks and 42 strikeouts.

Pounders signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians before the season. He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the 2009 Draft out of Temecula Valley High School in California.

Middle infielder Luis Guillorme will be the 26th man for today’s doubleheader. Pursuant to the 26th man rules, Guillorme will be available for the second game of the doubleheader only. One interesting note is this is the last year of baseball’s 26th Man Rule. Starting next season, all active rosters will have 26 players with a maximum of 13 pitchers on the roster.

Normally, you would see a team choose to go with a pitcher for a the 26th man. For example, the first ever 26th man was Jeremy Hefner. However, with the Mets already having an extra arm in the bullpen when they called up Tim Peterson to replace Robinson Cano on the roster, the team had a short bench already.

Guillorme has been hot at the plate lately. Over the past week, Guillorme is 6-for-18 with two doubles. Since he was sent down to Triple-A, he has been hitting .303/.428/.403 while playing second, third, and shortstop. The Mets will have the option to keep him on the roster after the game or send him back down to Triple-A.

The Mets announced Sunday that infielder Robinson Cano has been placed on the injured list (IL) with left quad tightness retroactive to June 6. In a corresponding move, the team has recalled right-handed reliever Tim Peterson from Triple-A Syracuse.

Cano, 36, had already spent two weeks on the IL with quad tightness before being activated this homestand.

The second baseman appeared in Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, where he left the game after limping.

Since then, Cano and the Mets have not been on the same page in regards to the injury.

There have been conflicting opinions on how serious the injury is and if it would require a trip to the IL or not. On Sunday, that resolution finally came.

In 46 games for the Mets in 2019, Cano has hit .238/.284/.366 with three home runs. He has been worth -0.5 bWAR.

Making his first start since reversing on his prior decision to retire, Andrew Church had a good first inning but was not effective after that allowing ten total hits in only 3.1 innings of work, five of which were for extra bases. Another recent addition to the Syracuse team, Louis Coleman, helped bail Church out of a jam in the fourth inning but allowed a two run home run to former Met Jordany Valdespin in the fifth inning.

The Rumble Ponies offense was able to get runners into scoring position, but could not drive them in as they went 0-for-8 in those situations.
After dominating the Florida State League, Tommy Wilson is finding the promotion to the (AA) Eastern League to be much tougher as he allowed seven plus base-runners to reach for the third consecutive game in a row without completing a fifth inning of work. He also allowed two more home runs which brings him up to an astounding seven in three (AA) starts. This is more than he’s allowed in the last two years combined pitching for St. Lucie, Brooklyn, and Cal State-Fullerton.

Nunez bounced back nicely from his previous start tossing five scoreless innings with only one hit allowed before running into trouble in the sixth inning. After allowing a two run home run to Welfrin Mateo, Nunez was pulled in favor of Darwin Ramos who would allow two more runs to score to put the Mets down 4-3. He would end up with the win though thanks to Cortes’ home run in the seventh and Zabaleta would shut down the Tarpons offense for the next two innings to lock down the save.

Vientos put Columbia on the board early with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The offense went quiet until the sixth inning when Juan Uriarte launched a solo home run to tie the game 3-3.
