Middle infielder Luis Guillorme will be the 26th man for today’s doubleheader. Pursuant to the 26th man rules, Guillorme will be available for the second game of the doubleheader only. One interesting note is this is the last year of baseball’s 26th Man Rule. Starting next season, all active rosters will have 26 players with a maximum of 13 pitchers on the roster.

Normally, you would see a team choose to go with a pitcher for a the 26th man. For example, the first ever 26th man was Jeremy Hefner. However, with the Mets already having an extra arm in the bullpen when they called up Tim Peterson to replace Robinson Cano on the roster, the team had a short bench already.

Guillorme has been hot at the plate lately. Over the past week, Guillorme is 6-for-18 with two doubles. Since he was sent down to Triple-A, he has been hitting .303/.428/.403 while playing second, third, and shortstop. The Mets will have the option to keep him on the roster after the game or send him back down to Triple-A.
