One step forward. One step backwards. One step forward. One step backwards.

For a good portion of the Mets season, immediately after the Mets take a step forward – they take a step backwards back into their previous situation but with less time. A few days ago the Mets won and put themselves 1.5 games out of the wild card spot. Then they lost. Then they won again and put themselves 1.5 games out of the wild card. Then they lost. That was yesterday.

So like two days ago (and four days ago) the Mets find themselves in a must win game except now there are even less games remaining for the Mets to back themselves into the playoffs. At least the Mets have exactly the pitcher they would want to go tonight in this position. Jacob deGrom makes his 11th start tonight, looking to bounce back from his early (injury induced) exit his last time out. Over 56.0 innings this year he has a 2.09 ERA, 2.01 FIP, 0.929 WHIP and a 205 ERA+. Jacob left his last start due to a hamstring spasm after 2.0 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, the most earned runs he has allowed in a start this year. The Rays have the following numbers against him:

Willy Adames 1-3, HR, K

Hunter Renfroe 3-9, 2B, 2 HR, 2 K

Kevin Kiermaier 2-6, 2B, 2 K

Manuel Margot 2-9, 3B, 2 K

Brett Phillips 0-2, BB

Joey Wendle 0-3

Mike Zunino 0-5, 3 K

The Mets draw Pete Fairbanks who is having a terrific year for the first place Rays – as a reliever. Pete has pitched in 24 games and only start, totaling 23.0 innings with a 2.74 ERA, 2.71 FIP, 1.435 WHIP and 156 ERA+. His only start this year happened on the 16th where he allowed 1 hit over an inning and that was on purpose. He then pitched an inning the next day. He has not faced anyone on the Mets roster in an official game.

Let’s Go Mets!

After four straight days of COVID-19 related postponements, the New York Mets will return to action on Tuesday with a twi-night doubleheader against the upstart Miami Marlins at Citi Field.

What started out as an unorthodox 60 game schedule, has now evolved into an absolutely grueling test of determination and endurance as the 12-14 Mets will play 34 games in 34 days to close out the rest of this bizarre season.

The Mets will have their work cut out for them this week as they’ll play nine games in six days — including three doubleheaders — two of those against the New York Yankees this weekend.

“It’s a challenge, but this is a year that can’t be about excuses,’’ general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said Monday.

“We are not the only team that has faced adversity with scheduling. We’re not the only team that’s faced adversity with losing players or coaches for a period of time… We’ve got to think about what we do have and find ways to be competitive with the schedule we’re faced with.”

That’s easier said than done, and honestly, I feel that the Mets have been dealt a very unfair hand that clearly puts them at a disadvantage no matter how you look at it.

Here is how the next six days shake out:

Tue: Doubleheader vs. Marlins, 5:10 PM
Wed: Single game vs. Marlins, 7:10 PM
Thu: Single game vs. Marlins, 7:10 PM

Fri: Doubleheader @ Yankees, time TBA
Sat: Single game @ Yankees, time TBA
Sun: Doubleheader @ Yankees, time TBA

That is one heck of a challenging week ahead for the Amazins, especially that weekend tilt against the first-place Yanks.

Van Wagenen said yesterday, that the Mets will treat every game beginning tonight as a “must-win game.”

If the season ended today, the Mets would not qualify for the postseason, although a series win against the Marlins and Yankees would put them in a good position for that second wild card. In other words, it’s not over yet.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle facing rookie skipper Luis Rojas, is the dilapidated state of the team’s starting rotation.

The Mets have yet to announce their pitching plans for the week. The only certainty is that ace right-hander Jacob deGrom will start one of the games tonight.

The Mets are also keeping their fingers crossed that rookie David Peterson (shoulder inflammation) will come off the injured list and make a start this week.

Peterson, 24, has been a very pleasant surprise and if the Mets are going to make a serious postseason run, they’ll need him to take his turn every five days.

After that, take your pick between Rick Porcello, Steven Matz, Corey Oswalt and Robert Gsellman. Slim pickings.

It’s tough to envision the Mets advancing to the playoffs with a rotation that is fraught with so many fragile and ineffective options despite having the game’s best pitcher in deGrom heading the rotation.

But hey, stranger things have happened and let’s face it, the NL East isn’t exactly the powerhouse everyone expected it to be.

Truth be told, the Mets are every bit as good as the Braves, Phillies and Nationals right now. The division is still theirs for the taking and with a little luck you just never know.

I believe the next six days will tell us if the Mets have the will and the wherewithal to make some magic happen over the final five weeks of the regular season.

It’s not going to be easy and they’ll certainly have many other obstacles to overcome, but it should make for some compelling and dramatic Mets baseball along the way. So buckle up and strap yourselves in.

ESPN • WCBS 880 AM • WQBU 92.7 FM

We are only a few days into the new season and I’m going to offer my controversial Hot Take from yesterday: I think Díaz threw a good pitch, and sometimes you get beat.

It’s hard saying that in the backdrop of what happened last year and his performance this spring/summer. As you know by now, Díaz allowed the tying run in the ninth and the Mets went into extras with Hunter Strickland – who performed exactly like his numbers suggested he would – and the Mets couldn’t recover.

Heartbreaking losses are now 2.7 times more heartbreaking in 2020, and I don’t know about you but I forgot how to lose so it was a rough night.

But now we’re back. The Mets have one of the Sunday night games as they finish off their series with the Braves. Since teams are essentially playing in geographic divisions, Sunday night baseball is now a double header, moving the Mets to a much more normal 7 p.m. start rather than 8 p.m. start.

Porcello is coming off an awful year, pitching 174.1 innings over 32 starts with a 5.52 ERA, 4.76 FIP, 87 ERA+, and 1.394 WHIP.

The only time his FIP has ever been higher was in his rookie year, where he posted a much better 114 ERA+ (his ERA+ has been above 100 four times in 11 seasons). The last time he faced the Braves was in 2018 and it was a good start, allowing only one run on two hits over five innings.

The Braves have the following numbers against him:

He made his debut in 2017 at 24-years-old and made 19 starts over 100 innings with a 4.32 ERA. The following year he made 30 starts and pitched 164.0 innings with a 3.90 ERA.

Last year, the Braves moved him mostly to the bullpen, and he pitched in 55 games with four starts totaling 68.1 innings with a 3.16 ERA, 4.24 FIP, 1.317 WHIP, and 144 ERA+. Last year was his best in ERA+, ERA, and WHIP and his worst in FIP.

His numbers against the Mets were not good last year. He logged only 6.1 innings despite pitching in relief for six games and starting one, allowing eight runs from nine hits and three walks.

Despite that stat line, for the most part, the Mets’ numbers against him are not that scary:

Game Notes

New York starters have allowed only one run after two starts, tossing 11.0 innings and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 15. In 2019, the Mets starters owned a 3.84 ERA (402 earned runs/941.1 innings) with 273 walks and 964 strikeouts. The team’s 3.84 ERA ranked seventh in the majors and fourth in the NL, while the 964 strikeouts ranked fourth in the majors and second in the senior circuit.

Rick Porcello is tied for 11th among active pitchers with 149 career wins. He’s earned at least 10 victories in all but one of his 11 major league campaigns. He is one of just five pitchers with at least 10 seasons with double-digit wins since his rookie year in 2009, joining Zack Greinke (11), Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and Jon Lester.

Porcello tonight will make his fifth career start against Atlanta. In his previous four starts, he’s 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA (eight earned runs/24.0
innings). He has won each of his last two starts against the club, both in Atlanta, in 2016 and 2018.

The wait is over. At 6:00 PM on Monday, MLB released its complete 2020 schedule. The Mets will open at home on Friday, July 24 against the Atlanta Braves at 4:10 p.m. ET.

The Mets schedule is difficult to say the least. Through August 6, the Mets opponents played to a .571 winning percentage in 2019 and is the toughest start of any team in the majors. The first five series are against the Braves twice, the Boston Red Sox twice and the Washington Nationals.

As MLB is limiting travel in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, all teams will be playing a regional schedule in 2020. For example, teams in the NL East will play only in their own division and against AL East teams. This gives NL East teams a very tough road to the playoffs as the AL East is expected to be very competitive.

The playoff format will be the same in 2020 as it was in 2019.

The complete schedule is below:

– July 24-26: vs. Atlanta Braves (3 games)

– July 27-28: @ Boston Red Sox (2 games)

– July 29-30: vs. Red Sox (2 games)

– July 31-Aug. 3: @ Braves (4 games)

– Aug. 4-5: @ Washington Nationals (2 games)

– Aug. 6: OFF

– Aug. 7-9: vs. Miami Marlins (3 games)

– Aug. 10-13: vs. Nationals (4 games)

– Aug. 14-16: @ Philadelphia Phillies (3 games)

– Aug. 17-20: @ Marlins (4 games)

– Aug. 21-23: vs. New York Yankees (3 games)

– Aug. 24: OFF

– Aug. 25-27: vs. Marlins (3 games)

– Aug. 28-30: @ Yankees (3 games)

– Aug. 31: OFF

– Sept. 1-2: @ Baltimore Orioles (2 games)

– Sept. 3: OFF

– Sept. 4-7: vs. Phillies (4 games)

– Sept. 8-9: vs. Orioles (2 games)

– Sept. 10: OFF

– Sept. 11-13: @ Toronto Blue Jays (3 games)

– Sept. 14: OFF

– Sept. 15-17: @ Phillies (3 games)

– Sept. 18-20: vs. Braves (3 games)

– Sept. 21-23: vs. Tampa Bay Rays (3 games)

– Sept. 24-27: @ Nationals (4 games)

MMO will analyze and provide more details of the schedule in future articles. Suffice it to say, upon initial inspection, the schedule is tough.

On May 31, 1964, the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants played a scheduled doubleheader at the then new Shea Stadium. A record crowd of 57,037 – the largest crowd in MLB that year – was on hand, and what they witnessed bordered on the surreal.

The first game started at 1:05 PM. When all was said and done, the fans that stayed the course nearly stayed until June, as the games ended at 11:25 PM that night – including a Game 2 that lasted over seven hours. It featured a triple play, outstanding outings by relief pitchers on both sides, and many other unusual occurrences.

The doubleheader also featured a young Ed Kranepool, who played a twin bill the day before for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons before being called up the following morning to the big club. Kranepool would play 51 innings in the space of 48 hours.

The first game was a normal everyday two hour and twenty-nine minute affair won by San Francisco, 5-3. Winning pitcher Juan Marichal picked up his eighth victory of the season in the Giants’ win.

The nightcap was a marathon ending scarcely 30 minutes before midnight, June 1. The box score of this classic is here.

The Giants took a 6-1 lead early in the game, but the Mets tied it on RBIs by Kranepool and Charley Smith. Then, in the seventh, Joe Christopher hit a ball just over the outstretched glove of Willie Mays for a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6.

Larry Bearnarth took the mound for the Mets in the eighth inning. Pitching into the extra innings, Bearnarth gave up a tenth inning triple to Tom Haller and a double to Orlando Cepeda in the twelfth, but no runs. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s Bob Shaw and Ron Herbel combined for five full innings of shutout ball before Gaylord Perry came in to pitch a scoreless thirteenth.

In the top of the fourteenth, Bearnarth started off by walking Jesus Alou. A single by Mays followed, and Cepeda came up to the plate. With the runners moving on the pitch, Cepeda lined out to shortstop Roy McMillan. Roy then stepped on second base for the second out and threw to Kranepool at first for a 6-6-3 triple play. It was the second triple play in Mets history. Bearnarth left after the fourteenth, with seven shutout innings of relief.

Galen Cisco entered in the fifteenth and got into a relief pitcher’s duel with Perry. Cisco allowed only two singles over eight shutout innings, during which he retired 14 straight hitters and recorded five strikeouts. Perry matched scoreless innings with Cisco, bringing his total for the game to 10 while striking out nine batters. Cisco’s and Perry’s outstanding performances kept the game tied after 22 innings.

Jim Davenport came to bat against Cisco with two out in the top of the 23rd. Davenport hit a triple to right field and Cap Peterson was intentionally walked. Pinch hitter Del Crandall then doubled to score Davenport, putting the Giants ahead 7-6. Peterson then scored on Jesus Alou’s single for another Giant run. The runs were the first by Giants batters in 19 innings of play.

San Francisco reliever Bob Hendley retired the Mets in order in the bottom of the 23rd, ending the game and the nearly 10 hour marathon. The Giants had an 8-6 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.

Giants pitchers struck out 22 Mets in Game 2, eclipsing the mark for strikeouts in an extra-inning game (21), set initially by the Philadelphia Phillies. When the final out was registered, the game became the longest ever in terms of time to be completed in the history of the major leagues – 7 hours and 23 minutes. The doubleheader, also the longest in history, went 9 hours and 52 minutes. The record still stands.

Good Morning, Mets fans!

Sadly, we will have to wait just a little bit longer for the game that we love, but the right decisions were made.

On Thursday, Major League Baseball announced that – as of 4:00 PM that afternoon – all Spring Training games will be cancelled going forward as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the start of the MLB season will officially be delayed for at least two weeks. The World Baseball Classic qualifiers will also be postponed.

Here’s what else you need to know:

Latest Mets News

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets closed Clover Park to the public on Thursday evening. Fans with tickets to future home games will be eligible for refunds.

This comes after his son, Donovan Mitchell Jr., received a positive test result on Thursday morning.

So naturally, they gave him a job.

The Mets defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Mets’ pitchers proved strong once again, and the offense put up just enough to take the W.

Pitching

Noah Syndergaard came out of the gate strong, striking out two in a one-two-three first inning. After a clean second, Syndergaard surrendered a run in the third on a Alex De Goti double to left. The right-hander proceeded to recover quickly, as he struck out the next two and induced a grounder to end the threat.

Robert Gsellman took the reins in the fourth, allowing a double but stranding the runner at second. Gsellman followed with a clean fifth.

In the sixth, Erasmo Ramirez allowed a hit and a walk but escaped trouble. Ramirez then returned for a strong seventh.

Ryder Ryan took the eighth and retired the side in order.

Joe Zanghi came in to close the ninth and escaped a bit of trouble thanks in part to Luis Guillorme‘s stellar relay to home, cutting down Jake Adams at the plate.

Offense

The Mets were kept off the board for the first four innings, but in the fifth, Robinson Cano smacked a double to left to score Ryan Cordell with the team’s first run. Pete Alonso then traded places with Cano, pulling a double of his own and putting the Mets in front 2-1.

Both Cano and Alonso finished the day 2-for-3, each with a single and a double.

Amed Rosario, Jake Marisnick, and Ryan Cordell racked up a hit each.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rene Rivera smacked a solo homer to left, extending the score to 3-1.

The Mets announced on Thursday they’eve finalized a multi-year deal with new manager Luis Rojas. They will introduce him at a press conference on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET at Citi Field.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen help a presser on Wednesday to tell media that the team had chosen Rojas as their next manager and they were negotiating a multi-year deal. Carlos Beltran and the Mets agreed to mutually part ways earlier this month after only two months with the team as their manager. He was the only player named in the Major League Baseball’s investigation into sign-stealing.

Rojas, 38, has been coaching in the Mets system since 2007 and spent the 2019 season on the big league staff as the quality control coach. He began his managerial career in 2011 with the Gulf Coast League Mets. Rojas managed the next three seasons in Savannah, then two years in St. Lucie and finally in Double-A Binghamton for 2017 and 2018.

He is the son of former big league manager Felipe Alou and brother of former Mets outfielder Moises Alou.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts will replace the semi-retired Mike Francesa on afternoon drive from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on WFAN. ‘Joe and Evan’, as they are known, are in negotiations now with WFAN’s parent company Entercom for their new slot but the Post reported that talks between the sides are nearing a conclusion. The duo will receive a substantial raise to take the coveted afternoon drive slot that Francesa has been part of either alone or with Chris Russo, as part of the famous Mike and the Mad Dog show, for over 30 years.

Benigno and Roberts, both devout Mets fans, are number one in their current time slots mid-days from 10:00 AM to 1:00PM. They received an eight share in the fall ratings period and lead the ratings in the important male demographic that Entercom follows so closely. They had been the favorites to receive the afternoon job, but some reports surfaced that the station wanted to go younger in the afternoons and Benigno, who is 66 and 30 years older than Roberts, is uncertain how long he wants to stay at the station.

Francesa, for his part, will do a half hour show from 6:00-6:30 PM on WFAN in addition to political and sports commentary on the Radio.com app.

Joe and Evan, who have been partnered since January 2007, will be taking over a time slot once dominated by Francesa but has faltered recently from competition from the Michael Kay Show on ESPN radio. For the first two-thirds of the all important winter book, Kay is leading Francesa handily. The final results will be released on Monday, December 23. It will be interesting to see if the new duo, who will not be leading in the ratings in their new role, can beat the new incumbents on ESPN.

The mid-day role is likely to be filled with current WFAN hosts Maggie Gray and Marc Malusis who have been together before on CBS Sports Radio. They are paired together this week as what some see as an audition.
