The Mets defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Mets’ pitchers proved strong once again, and the offense put up just enough to take the W.

Pitching

Noah Syndergaard came out of the gate strong, striking out two in a one-two-three first inning. After a clean second, Syndergaard surrendered a run in the third on a Alex De Goti double to left. The right-hander proceeded to recover quickly, as he struck out the next two and induced a grounder to end the threat.

Robert Gsellman took the reins in the fourth, allowing a double but stranding the runner at second. Gsellman followed with a clean fifth.

In the sixth, Erasmo Ramirez allowed a hit and a walk but escaped trouble. Ramirez then returned for a strong seventh.

Ryder Ryan took the eighth and retired the side in order.

Joe Zanghi came in to close the ninth and escaped a bit of trouble thanks in part to Luis Guillorme‘s stellar relay to home, cutting down Jake Adams at the plate.

Offense

The Mets were kept off the board for the first four innings, but in the fifth, Robinson Cano smacked a double to left to score Ryan Cordell with the team’s first run. Pete Alonso then traded places with Cano, pulling a double of his own and putting the Mets in front 2-1.

Both Cano and Alonso finished the day 2-for-3, each with a single and a double.

Amed Rosario, Jake Marisnick, and Ryan Cordell racked up a hit each.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rene Rivera smacked a solo homer to left, extending the score to 3-1.
