The Mets (58-69) defeated the Astros (40-87) by the score of 3-1 today at Citi Field.
RA Dickey furthered his journey for the Cy Young today with another brilliant start. He picked up the first RBI for the Mets on the day too – I guess he was worried that he would not get any support on his own.
The final line: 7 great innings while allowing only five hits and a single walk. The only earned run came about on a wild pitch, so he did not even allow an RBI hit on the day. A double play in the fifth got him out of a bases loaded, one out jam. I could gush over RA Dickey all day and how happy I am that he actually has a legitimate claim to fame for the Cy Young chase. It could not have happened to a nicer guy.
Rauch and Edgin combined for a clean eighth and a hold for each of them, and Francisco somehow shut the door in the ninth without any problems. He struck out one and was throwing heat tonight, touching 94-96 MPH with consistency.
The three Met runs scored on a Dickey infield RBI single, a Turner solo HR in the sixth inning and an RBI single by Jason Bay in the eighth inning. Unlikely sources? Perhaps, but it definitely got the job done. I will take the victory for RA Dickey.
Notes
Dickey was taken out with only 86 pitches thrown according to the MLB tracker after he allowed the run in the seventh. He improves to 16 – 4 with an ERA of 2.76.
Francisco picks up save number 21 and lowers his ERA to 6.11 while Rauch and Edgin pick up hold number 14 and 3, respectively.
Torres was the man with two hits on the day and Turner’s HR was his first on the year. Give the man some credit. Justin Turner, in the past two years, is .354 (46-130). Nice.
Dickey, who became the Mets’ first 16-game winner since Johan Santana in 2008, is the only NL pitcher to rank in the top four in wins, ERA and strikeouts.
