With Seth Lugo having his first throwing session today, the focus now shifts to Steven Matz and when he will begin his own throwing program.

According to Marc Carig of Newsday, Matz is scheduled to begin his throwing program tomorrow. At this time, it has not been reported the distance Matz will be throwing or when it is anticipated he can throw from a mound.

Matz has been shut down with what he called a strained flexor tendon in his throwing arm. There have been reports that Mets doctors have been unable to confirm that diagnosis. There have been other reports the Mets are frustrated by Matz’s injury history. To be fair, Sandy Alderson has dispelled some of those rumors.

It will be interesting to see when Matz throws if he will be using the new leg step taught to him by Scott Rice or if he will return to his old mechanics. It will be more interesting to see how he responds to his first throwing session after having been shut down.

With Matz and Lugo on the mend, it may give the Mets the pitching depth they believed they had to begin the season. It also puts pressure on Robert Gsellman to pitch better after struggling in his first two starts.
