New York Mets rookie southpaw, Steven Matz was able to keep his team in the game in Friday’s 6-1 loss to Colorado. Without having his best stuff, Matz navigated nicely through six innings of work.

Matz allowed just two runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out five. His ERA lowered a tad to 3.35 on the season after Friday’s start. Matz navigated through troubling situation after trouble situation against the Rockies.

He though left only trailing 2-1 in the game, his team unable to back him. Manager, Terry Collins was happy with how his lefty was able to will his way through six innings of laboring work. He had a conversation with his pitcher after he completed his sixth inning.

“I know it’s hard, but tonight you don’t have your ‘A’ game. I would think it’s got to be fun to be a pitcher and go out there without your best stuff and battle really hard against a very good offensive team and look up coming out in the sixth inning and it’s 2-1. You’ve got to be pretty happy with that,” Collins said.

Steven took the loss on the night as his record dropped to 8-7 on the season. Matz has shown his will and ability to pitch with the bone spur that will require surgery at season’s end. He has done well as of late, as the pitching staff seems to be yet again putting it together, carrying an anemic offense who has been unable to help them.
