The Mets potentially filled a big need earlier this week when they announced the signing of former Yankees shutdown reliever Dellin Betances. That move gets them closer to what their roster could look like during the 2020 season.
In my opinion, I believe they should still add a veteran catcher, bullpen arm on Major League deal, and potentially a bench piece to improve to depth. For now, let’s take a look at the what Roster Resource has as the Mets projected 26-man roster.
Lineup
Brandon Nimmo – CF
Jeff McNeil – 3B
Pete Alonso – 1B
Robinson Cano – 2B
J.D. Davis – LF
Michael Conforto – RF
Wilson Ramos – C
Amed Rosario – SS
Roster Resource has Yoenis Cespedes still on the injured list, which makes sense given that he missed all of last season and we haven’t seen him play since multiple surgeries.
In terms of the lineup, I would flip Conforto and Cano here, and it looks like the Mets should be strong offensively again in 2020.
Bench
Tomas Nido – C
Luis Guillorme – INF
Jed Lowrie – INF
Jake Marisnick – OF
Dominic Smith – 1B/OF
Could be a strong group if everyone is healthy, but also possible that one of Lowrie and Smith get traded. Depth beyond this group is weak with only catcher Ali Sanchez and infielder Andres Gimenez as 40-man roster position players not on the projected roster. Guillorme does have options, meaning he could be sent to the minors if they add to this group.
Max Moroff (IF/OF) and Jarrett Parker (OF) are the

Rotation
Jacob deGrom
Noah Syndergaard
Marcus Stroman
Steven Matz (L)
Rick Porcello
Certainly a step down from the group that finished the 2019 season for the Mets, though it could still be one of the best in the National League.
Bullpen
Edwin Diaz
Dellin Betances
Seth Lugo
Justin Wilson (L)
Jeurys Familia
Brad Brach
Robert Gsellman
Michael Wacha
Tons of upside and question marks here. Adding a Will Harris or Steve Cishek would give them another veteran arm that’s enjoyed consistent success. If they did that, Gsellman can simply be optioned to Triple-A.
