Signing Oliver Perez instead of Randy Wolf or Jon Garland should be a no-brainer for the Mets.
I know how turned off some of you are by Perez, but the fact of the matter is that he is young, talented and will get better.
Anthony McCarron of the Daily News, writes the following today,
Re-signing Oliver Perez, which Minaya called “50-50” at the winter meetings, seems to be their first choice, but the Mets have inquired about several other pitchers, as well, and there are other intriguing names available since last week’s non-tender deadline.
It’s these other intriguing names that really scare me. The one and only name we should be considering is Perez at this point.
Sure Derek Lowe is more talented and should be the first choice, but it’s a mute point because the Mets have bowed out of the Lowe sweepstakes due to financial constraints.
That makes Oliver Perez the next best, and in my opinion, the only option.
Last season, Oliver Perez was the Mets’ biggest weapon against the Phillies, and he has been ever since he first joined the team.
The Phillies are absolutely impotent against Perez.
Few starting pitchers in baseball dominates the Phillies the way Oliver Perez does.
He absolutely owned them in 2008 with a stingy 0.35 ERA against them, and Perez allowed just one homerun to them all season long in four very big and very crucial starts in 2008.
That alone should be reason enough on why the Mets should sign Oliver Perez.
