Kelly Shoppach: Will he be the answer?

As expected, the Mets announced they have activated Kelly Shoppach in time for tonight’s game against the Reds.

To make room for Shoppach on the active roster, the Mets optioned Rob Johnson to Triple-A Buffalo.

Shoppach will wear uniform #6. He was acquired yesterday from the Boston Red Sox on a waiver claim for a player to be named later.

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 (35-140) with five home runs, 12 doubles and 17 RBI in 48 games with the Red Sox this season.

The 6-0, 220-pound native of Fort Worth, TX, joined the Red Sox this year after spending two seasons with Tampa Bay. Shoppach, who bats and throws right-handed, has .227 (324-1428) lifetime batting average and 64 home runs and 197 RBI in 508 games with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

The Mets have acquired righty-hitting catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox for a player to be named later after placing a waiver claim on him.

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 (35-for-140) with five homers and 17 RBIs in 48 games with Boston this season. He is due to be a free agent after the season. Shoppach is a career .270 hitter against left-handed pitching.

Rob Johnson is most likely the odd man out as Shoppach is expected to join the team on Wednesday. Johnson and Mike Nickeas have hit a combined .196 (30-for-153) with one homer and 17 RBIs this season.

In other news, LHP Garrett Olson has cleared waivers, and is headed back to Triple-A Buffalo, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Olson was designated for assignment when Johan Santana was activated from the disabled list on Saturday.
