Let me begin by saying that I count Joel Sherman among my favorite sports journalists, but what was he thinking when he wrote this last night for the Post?
IKE DAVIS took batting practice in Buffalo yesterday morning in anticipation of hitting cleanup in a 1 p.m. start against the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.
Fifty minutes before first pitch, however, he was notified of his promotion to The Show. So he flew to New York to arrive just in time at Citi Field for another round of BP in preparation for his major league debut last night against the Cubs.
So when it comes to the Mets’ mantra this season, we can move right to Recovery because the organization ignored Prevention with its best position prospect.
Sherman goes on to rip the organization, specifically Omar Minaya, because he felt that rushing Ike to Citi Field after he had already taken batting practice in Buffalo was jeopardizing the health of their best prospect. Really?
Hey, I know ripping apart the Mets is en vogue these days (but not for much longer), but gimme a break and find something legitimate to criticize the team about, not this.
Apparently, the second round of batting practice did little to impede what would become a smashing debut by Ike Davis. After his 2-4, 1 RBI game, he was greeted by Jeff Francoeur with a shaving cream pie in the face. A just reward indeed.
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s a beautiful morning for Mets fans today. We should all have a little extra kick in our steps today.
