What an interesting week in Mets baseball. Not only did we see a 20 inning marathon game, we saw our closer get the win and a starter get the save. In addition to that, we saw the Mets call up Ike Davis from AAA and demote Mike Jacobs. Some people have been giving up on the Mets already because of their slow start. Give them time, and at least a few more games. Here’s a consolation prize : The NYM E.R.A. is actually better than that of Boston at this point. Onto the POTW!

My choice for MetsMerized Player Of The Week is…Mike Pelfrey!

Mike Pelfrey, a first round draft pick from a draft filled with stars, has been criticized because he has not given the fan base a reason to believe the Mets made the right move in drafting him so early. I am an open supporter of Mike Pelfrey, and I believe the New York media bubble contributes to his struggles. He has shown flashes of success, and after adding a splitter to his arsenal, he has looked strong this year.

Mike made one start this week, and he made it count : 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 0 R. (W, QS). He also came in for the save in the 20 inning game, posting a line of 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, S. Considering the guy pitched 8 shutout innings on the week and posted a W and a S, he deserves some credit. Add in the fact that he pitched against two solid teams (STL and COL), and that he batted .500 (1-2, RBI, BB) on the week, and Mike Pelfrey makes a strong choice for POTW.

Mike Pelfrey is a young pitcher who is still developing out there, and he seems to be ready to turn the page this year. He leads the Mets in Wins and Saves at this point, and may actually emerge to be our number 2 starter this season. I expect him to be more of a number 3, with Jon Niese taking over the 2 spot. In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how the season develops…Congratulations, Mike Pelfrey.

Honorable Mentions :

David Wright: .227 (5-22 ; 1 2B, 2 HR), 3 RBI, 12 TB, 9 BB, 2 SB, 2 R

Johan Santana: 1 GS : QS, ND, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 9 K

Past Award Winners:

One Hit Wonders: Jeff Francoeur

Of Note 4/11-4/18

Ike Davis is on the MLB roster and he will look to show that he belongs up here. I am not exactly for this move, but I will not complain if he hits.

Issue a blown save to Francisco Rodriguez and Raul Valdes.

John Maine’s ERA on the week was 12.38, but don’t worry John, Fernando Nieve posted a 12.27 ERA. I’m beginning to think Jerry is going to overuse and abuse Nieve, and it’s going to make him look like a bad pitcher.

Mejia needs to start, the frequency of his pitching as an MLB reliever will not help him be a starter. I do like what I have seen, but he relies too little on his secondary stuff. There was a Stoner sighting on the mound. FP Mets says management is pretty high on him.

The Mets were 2-4 this week. They hit 3 HR (Francoeur, Wright x2) and stole 5 bases.

The Chicago Cubs come to town this week and so do the Atlanta Braves. I predict 4 wins. Let’s go Mets!
