In the historic battle of hotel ottoman versus Mets reliever, a winner is surfacing.

That winner looks to be Seth Lugo, who threw his first live bullpen session against Mets batters since fracturing his left pinky toe. Featuring a sharp curveball, the right-hander could look to make his Spring debut later this week.

The batters facing Lugo included fellow odd-injury star Yoenis Cespedes, who has not played since 2018 after heel surgery and a subsequent altercation with an angry boar sidelined him. Cespedes took Lugo deep twice during the session.

“The second one where he fell down, he just got it in the wind,” Lugo said of Cespedes in an interview after the session. “The first one, that was a good swing, but I wouldn’t pitch him like that in a real game, so I knew what I was getting into.”

Both Lugo and Cespedes could function as vital parts of this 2020 Mets team, who, barring injuries, are projected as the slight favorites in a highly competitive division.
