Talk about a good week for your Mets pitching prospects… Seth Lugo has been recognized as the SAL Pitcher of the Week after an awesome start a couple days ago. On August 10th, Lugo tossed one of the better starts all year in the Mets organization, where he dominated through seven shutout innings while striking out 11. He allowed just four hits all evening and walked none, leaving his SAL ERA at 0.69. He has 21 punch-outs over his first 13.0 innings in Savannah to date.
Lugo was promoted to Savannah to replace the injured Matthew Koch and has quickly become acclimated to the South Atlantic League. He was our 34th round draft pick in the ’11 draft and has put together back-to-back exceptional pitching performances. The key for Lugo is his ability to locate his pitches, which has given him a 21:0 K/BB ratio so far… yeah, 21:0. There’s actually not even a ratio because he hasn’t walked a batter. Isn’t that cool?

I just wrote about Lugo the other day when Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero and Zack Wheeler all delivered solid pitching performances. I called it an epic night for Mets pitching prospects.
Lugo got off to a rough start in Brooklyn this season after missing all of 2012 with lumbar fusion surgery. But he seems to be pitching more effectively and one scout told me that it’s because he’s changing speeds and spotting the ball well. “He can be very deceptive.”
So two start into his promotion he has tossed 13.0 innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits, zero walks and 21 strikeouts.
He is definitely one to watch. He will not overpower hitters with his low-nineties fastball, but he makes up for that with a plus curveball and a much improved changeup.
The Mets have at least a dozen top righthanded pitching prospects ahead of him, so his path to the majors may come in a relief role. But remember the name…
