Surprise, surprise, the Mets did select someone in the first round and passed in the second and third rounds…

A total of 15 players were selected in the major league phase of the draft.

Here are my thoughts I shared on Twitter…

David Groveman says that the Mets may have selected this player for the Miami Marlins. So there might be a small trade coming involving Lobstein. Jonathan Mayo also says he could be moved to the Tigers.

The 2012 MLB Rule 5 Draft takes place this morning in Nashville at 10:00 AM.

The draft is usually the closing bell for the Winter Meetings as teams wrap things up and begin leaving the hotel shortly after it’s conclusion.

Yesterday, Sandy Alderson said that it was very unlikely that the team would be adding any players from the Rule 5 Draft this year.

Any players the Mets selected would have to be kept on the 25 man roster for an entire season or you risk having to return the player back to their original team.

With the Mets’ roster shrouded in such flux and uncertainty, it would hardly make any sense to expend a spot on a virtual unknown quantity when the team is in such deep need of help at many levels.

However, there is some risk that the Mets could lose some players, with infielders Jefry Marte and Josh Satin, and possibly reliever Armando Rodriguez topping the list.

Again, any teams selecting these players would have to keep them on their 25 man roster for the entire season or els they end up coming back the way Elvin Ramirez did after the Nationals selected him in the 2010 Rule 5.

We’ll see how it plays out…
