According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets have no intention of non-tendering Ike Davis based on what team insiders have told him.
Rubin adds that team insiders appear satisfied that Davis will not be cost prohibitive in 2014 in a way that would force them to cut him loose.
That may be true, but I would still be very surprised Ike Davis is still a Met in 2014. If ever there was a perfect condition for a player desperately needing a change of scenery, Ike Davis is it.
Obviously, the Mets will tender him and hope to get something for him in a trade, rather than non-tendering him and allowing him to become a free agent. The Mets could also settle on a figure agreeable with Ike and avoid arbitration altogether.
I really hate the first base situation as it stands right now.
We have no clear cut solutions and it agonizes me to think 2014 is going to be yet another evaluation year for the position. Sure it would be great to go after Cuban phenom Jose Abreu who is considered to be better than Yasiel Puig, but who can look at me and seriously say the Mets will outbid everyone else for him after his showcase later this month?
No way, no how…
So we’re stuck with questionable options like David, Lucas Duda, Josh Satin, Wilmer Flores and Allan Dykstra, none of whom look like very ideal everyday options at this point for different reasons.
Davis, who suffered a season-ending right oblique strain last month, was placed on the 60 Day Disabled List today along with reliever Scott Rice.
Rice will undergo surgery on his sports hernia in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
