Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reports that the Mets chose not to add cash to the Jeurys Familia deal because the upgrade in prospects was not substantial enough to warrant it. However, the team is still open to paying money to get better prospects in deals.

The team believes that they can redirect the $3 millon saved from this deal towards international signings while also using the $1 million in bonus pool money in that department as well.

Rival executives also spoke to Rosenthal and had mixed reviews. Some thought the return was light while others got the sense that relief pitching market is crowded which could have made the Mets expedite the process of trading the right-hander.

Rosenthal notes that the Mets view this deal as similar to last year’s Addison Reed trade and the Kelvin Herrera trade made between the Kansas City Royals and Washington Nationals earlier this season. One rival executive volunteered his thoughts on the matter specifically.

“We are somewhere in middle on it. While we don’t love either guy, it’s not terrible for a rental. Do wonder about timing. Value doesn’t seem compelling enough to jump ten days before deadline, especially with one of few true back-end relief pitchers on market.”

Whatever the case, the Mets have ended up with Bobby Wahl, William Toffey, and $1 million in international bonus pool money so far this trade season.
