The first big round of cuts has been made in Mets camp. While many highly-touted prospects including Dominic Smith had to pack their bags, rookie Amed Rosario has remained. While he doesn’t have a chance to make the big league club, Rosario has made the most of this opportunity, showing everyone what he’s made of.
“He’s shown me everything that needs to be seen,” Terry Collins said, speaking to Mike Puma of the NY Post. “He hasn’t hit for power in camp, but you know he’s got it. He’s got great hands, he’s got great poise on the field and he loves to play, got great energy. He’s going to be a good player.”
While showcasing his stellar defense, Rosario has gone 8-for-27 (.296) so far this spring. He has played a lot, allowing Asdrubal Cabrera to take some days off. Normally Jose Reyes would probably fill that role, however he is off playing in the World Baseball Classic.
“There is no doubt in my mind [Rosario] would like to walk into my office, which he won’t do, and ask for a day off because he’s out of gas,” Collins said.
Again, there is little-to-no chance he makes the Big League roster. He needs to play every day and unless both Asdrubal Cabrera and Jose Reyes get injured, he will reside in Triple-A Las Vegas until either 2018 or as a September call-up.
