In a statement, Mets broadcaster and former pitcher Ron Darling revealed he has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

“After the removal of the mass on my chest along with further tests, I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer,” Darling said in a statement. “My doctors have said they are optimistic that the cancer is treatable and that I would be back on air talking baseball in the next month or so. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their continued support.”

Darling, 58, made an initial announcement during the April 13th broadcast that he would be missing some time to undergo a procedure to remove the mass in his chest. On April 17th, booth-mate Gary Cohen said that the procedure went well.

In his 14th season broadcasting for the Mets, Darling is one of the best in the business. Todd Zeile has been in the booth with Gary when Keith Hernandez isn’t, but Zeile will probably be relegated to studio duties when Darling returns.

Speaking of Hernandez, here’s what he had to say about the news on Darling.
