Syracuse Mets – Carlos Gomez

Week Stats: .400/.435/.800, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 SB, 2 BB
Season Stats: .263/.312/.434, 8 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 5 SB, 6 BB

Gomez signed very late in the offseason, and it looks like he is now fully up to speed. Actually, that’s putting it lightly because Gomez was great this past week putting together a six game hitting streak with two three hit games and three multi-hit games. It was one of those weeks where it was hard to decipher what was his best game.

There was the April 29 game where he was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. The double was a ninth inning double which provided Syracuse with valuable insurance runs. There was also the May 5 game where Gomez was again 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI only this time he also homered.

This looks much more like the Gomez we have seen the past few seasons. He’s impacting the game in the outfield, on the base paths, and now at the plate. If he is able to keep up this level of production, he may put himself into consideration as bench depth for the Mets.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies – Barret Barnes

Week Stats: .467/.556/.533, 2B, 9 RBI, 2 SB, 2 BB
Season Stats: .375/.479/.600, 3 2B, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 2 SB

So far this season, Barnes has gotten a hit in 10 of the 11 games he has played. Over this past week, he had three multi-hit games, which is part of his current nine game hitting streak. Like with Gomez, it was difficult to pick which one was his best game.

That said, his May 3 game certainly stuck out. In the game, he was 3-for-5 with a double and 5 RBI. The double came in the fifth inning, and it would tie the score at five. His next RBI came as part of a seven run seventh which cinched the Rumble Ponies 12-5 victory.

St. Lucie Mets – Tony Dibrell

Week Stats: W, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Season Stats: 3-1, 2.61 ERA, 1.065 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

When it comes to prospects, it is not always about how you perform in any particular game. Sometimes, it is about how you respond to hardship. With respect to Dibrell, entering this week, he was coming off his worst start of the season. In four innings, he had allowed four earned over four innings, and he had walked three.

In his start on Saturday, Dibrell was everything he wasn’t in his previous start. Dibrell not only shut out the the Dunedin Blue Jays, but he would strike out six over 5.1 innings. More importantly, Dibrell did not walk a batter.

It is important to remember the Blue Jays have a loaded farm system which is ranked among the top five in baseball. The lineup Dibrell faced included five of the top 30 prospects in the Blue Jays farm system as determined by MLB Pipeline (Cal Stevenson, Kevin Vicuna, Ryan Noda, Alejandro Kirk, Samad Taylor). To perform well against this lineup is certainly noteworthy. To make the positive strides forward Dibrell and to do it against this lineup was a powerful performance.

Columbia Fireflies – Colin Holderman

Week/Season Stats: 1-0, 1.80 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9, 5.4 K/9

In his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2018, Holderman allowed one earned over five innings. While pitchers returning from Tommy John typically struggle with command, Holderman walked just one batter and 71.7 percent of his pitches were thrown for strikes. What is really remarkable was he needed just 53 pitches to get through the five innings. Overall, this was an excellent start for Holderman, and it should hopefully be a building block for what is not only his first season back from surgery, but also his first season with a full-season affiliate.
