After a four week delay to allow for COVID-19 safety measures to be implemented, the 2020-2021 LIDOM season finally kicked off last night. For the Mets, a total of ten players (listed here) are on the rosters for one of the six teams in the league, of which, five of them were on Opening Day active rosters.

One of the Mets newest players, infielder Robel Garcia, had himself a strong first night at the plate for the Aguilas Cibaenas going 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk. The Mets claimed Garcia off waivers from the Reds back in October.

Garcia played second base, while former Mets Melky Cabrera (LF) and Juan Lagares (RF) manned the corner outfield spots, and Nats youngster Victor Robles was in center.

Mets right-hander Ariel Jurado was slated to be the Opening Day starter for the Estrellas Orientales, but the game was postponed due to rain. On the other side of that rain out was Mets catcher Bruce Maxwell for the Toros del Este.

The Leones del Escogido had the most interesting lineup to watch on Opening Day, they had baseball’s top prospect Wander Franco and top 15 prospect Julio Rodriguez in it.

Oddly enough, the winter league that should interest Mets fans the most, is the Australian League. Mets’ big-time catching prospect Francisco Alvarez will be playing with the Sydney Blue Sox, along with four other prospects from the Mets organization. Their games start on Dec. 18. ]
