Update – Aug 10
Reyes will fly to Brooklyn tonight and start a three game rehab assignment with the Cyclones beginning on Thursday and ending on Saturday.
Update – Aug 9
Sandy Alderson confirmed today our report that Jose Reyes will not begin his rehab assignment tonight as was expected.
As we wrote yesterday, Reyes still feels some discomfort swinging the bat right-handed.
“It’s a day-to-day proposition. He was better today than he was yesterday,” Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said.
“That was really the reason we put him on the disabled list in the first place, that while he’s swinging fine from the right side he was having some discomfort from the right side. That’s diminished but it hasn’t completely resolved itself so we’re going to back him up a day or two.”
Update – Aug 8
A source tells me that shortstop Jose Reyes may not begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday as Terry Collins told reporters on Saturday.
We’re being told that today in Port St. Lucie, Reyes was only able to swing a bat from the left side and that he’s not able to swing right-handed yet because of lingering discomfort.
The same source says that Reyes made it known this afternoon, that he does not want to start a rehab assignment until he feels comfortable swinging from both sides of the plate.
Reyes is nursing an intercostal strain and was expected to be activated from the DL this Thursday. Doesn’t sound like that is still happening.
We’ll continue monitoring the situation on MMO…

Original Report – Aug 7
Mets infielder Jose Reyes is expected to play in a simulated game Monday before beginning a rehab assignment on Tuesday, manager Terry Collins said Saturday.
Reyes, who was placed on the disabled due to an intercostal strain, is expected to return from the DL when first eligible on Aug. 11.
Playing mostly third base, Reyes was batting .239 with a .278 OBP and .493 SLG with three home runs and eight RBIs in 67 at-bats with the Mets this season.
However, with Asdrubal Cabrera out with a sprained knee, Reyes will likely take over at shortstop once he returns or at least split time there with Matt Reynolds.
