lucas duda

Update: August 10

Lucas Duda has been moved to the 60 Day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for TJ Rivera. As Adam Rubin notes, this is more of a procedural move than anything else, as Duda has already missed well over 60 days.

Previous Update: Aug 3

Lucas Duda has been shut down from all baseball activities for 30 days according to general manager Sandy Alderson who told reporters that the first baseman suffered a “flare up” in his back.

Duda got the news after meeting with specialist Dr. Watkins who also told him surgery would not be necessary.

Duda has been on the disabled list since May 23 after he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back. He was hitting .231 with seven home runs and 19 RBI in 39 games before going on the DL.

This could very well be a season-ending setback for Duda and accentuates the importance of picking up James Loney as soon as Duda went down.

“Maybe if we reach the third round of the playoffs. It doesn’t look good,” Alderson said of Duda’s chances to return this season.

Since being acquired from San Diego, Loney has provided steady defense while batting .286 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 21 RBI in 54 games.

Original Report: July 25

Lucas Duda took ground balls at first base and swung a bat for the first time since sustaining a stress fracture in his back, this week.

However, while visiting with the team on Saturday and participating in light workouts, Duda explained that he has only been tracking pitches and is still a few weeks away from beginning a rehab assignment.
