Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic was the first to report that the Detroit Tigers were signing left-handed starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.
The deal is for five years and $77 million according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal also includes more potential money from incentives and at least one opt out.
Rodriguez, 28, posted a 3.8 fWAR in 2021 with the Boston Red Sox. He had a 4.74 ERA and 3.55 FIP in 157 2/3 innings.
The first-time free agent also posted a career-best 10.56 K/9 and career-low 2.68 BB/9 in the 2021 season.
Rodriguez becomes the first player to sign this offseason that declined the qualifying offer.
The starting pitcher market still includes right-handers Marcus Stroman, Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer, and left-handers Clayton Kershaw, Robbie Ray, and Carlos Rondon to name a few.
