Don’t be at all surprised if the Mets make a major move at the Trade Deadline.

Per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, the market is anticipating a big move by the Mets.

Currently holding a four-game lead atop the NL East with a 54-46 record – this was written before the conclusion of today’s series finale against the Braves – the Mets are getting ready for a return to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

They are also preparing for a tight battle for the pennant and, as a result, there are those within baseball that feel as though the Mets will have something big up their sleeves for the Trade Deadline.

McDaniel also passes on that rival executives have said that third baseman J.D. Davis is on the trade block.

It is no surprise that Davis has entered trade talks given that the Mets have long been linked with third baseman Kris Bryant, with the Chicago Cubs selling off all of their major pieces ahead of what is expected to be another complete teardown at Wrigley Field.

Bryant would certainly improve the defense significantly for the Mets, an area they have been looking to bolster since Spring Training, while the veteran also brings star power to the plate given that his current slash rate is .269/.359/.508. He’s also played six difference positions this season.

Also, and per McDaniel again, there are sources that suggest New York could be looking at Trevor Story.

The Colorado Rockies are expected to trade their All-Star shortstop at the deadline, and the Mets are now seen as a potential destination.

Mets acting GM Zack Scott has made it clear that he would be open to trading for a shortstop who can play other positions, and Story would give the Mets elite cover for Francisco Lindor who is currently on the injured list.

Then, of course, the Mets would have two quality bats heading into the postseason and having both Story and Lindor would give them a lot of flexibility when it comes to lineups and matchups in the postseason.

It goes without saying that adding either Bryant or Story would make this team that much better and, if they can get healthy and then remain that way heading into the postseason, they could be a sleeper team to keep an eye on.

Either way, it appears almost certain that the Mets will be one of the main players at the table come the trade deadline, and there is a very good chance that they could end up with one of the best position players when all is said and done.
