According to Mark Sanchez of the New York Post, the New York Mets have shown interest in free agent infielder Gio Urshela.

Urshela, 32, hit .299/.329/.374 with two home runs in only 62 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. The former Yankee had his season cut short in June because of a fractured left pelvis. The talented defender played first base, second base, shortstop, and third base this season. His best defensive spot was third base, with six defensive runs saved (0 OAA).

Urshela had a fine offensive season in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins when he hit .285/.338/.429 with 27 doubles, 13 home runs, and 64 RBIs in 551 plate appearances.

The Mets signed utilityman Joey Wendle earlier this offseason for infield depth, but that was before Ronny Mauricio suffered a likely-season-ending knee injury while playing winter ball.

President of baseball operations David Stearns has also reportedly contacted the agent for veteran Justin Turner. The former Met is more of a 1B/DH option at this point in his career, though he has lots of experience at third base. The Mets are likely looking for depth at third base, given the struggles of youngster Brett Baty this season in the majors and the injury to Mauricio.
