As they do each year the Mets are looking to expand their front office, something Mets owner Steve Cohen recently spoke about. Per Jim Duquette of SNY, two names he has heard in the potential mix are the former POBO of the Twins Derek Falvey and Kansas City Royals special assistant Tom McNamara.
It would be unlikely Falvey would be looking to take a demotion to a GM role under a POBO so a special advisor role could make sense. Falvey and Stearns previously worked together in Cleveland. Falvey’s tenure with the Twins was mixed. It included four postseason appearances but also five seasons where the team missed the playoffs. His acquisition track record was mixed and outside of Carlos Correa he largely avoided the top end of the free agent market. His best trade was arguably Nelson Cruz for Joe Ryan.

As the head of the Twins organization Falvey was known as much more hands on with the in the field product than Stearns has been. Where Stearns largely lets the manager and coaches run the show and make decisions with the front office providing information to guide and assist them, Falvey regularly spoke about the strong collaboration he wanted between the front office, the manager, and the teams analytical models.
Tom McNamara briefly played in the Mariners minor league system and went on to join their organization as a scout. He worked as a cross checker in Florida and Milwaukee as well. McNamara grew up a Mets fan and discussed it in podcast for Alliant.
Per Will Sammon of the Athletic, the additions to the front office “will likely come in the form of senior advisors, special assistants or vice presidents.” These positions make sense for both Falvey and McNamara. They also fit the “different points of view” Cohen has talked about without being completely counter to the processes the Mets currently have in place.
