The New York Mets (24-32) were defeated by the Texas Rangers (27-31) by a score of 10-8 at Globe Life Park in Arlington Tuesday evening.
Pitching:
Jacob deGrom made the start for the Mets tonight and was once again completely off. deGrom was flashing 97 mph on the gun but he never looked comfortable and lasted only four innings. All in all, deGrom allowed eight runs while walking one and striking out two.
The Rangers scored in every inning against deGrom until the dam finally broke in the fourth inning. DeGrom gave up home runs to Joey Gallo in the third inning and Nomar Mazara in the fourth. Eight runs were the most deGrom has given up all year.
Josh Smoker came on and pitched two innings for the Mets in the fifth and sixth innings. He also gave up two runs but struck out three.
Neil Ramirez came on in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning. Josh Edgin finished things off by pitching a scoreless inning in the eighth.
Offense:
The Mets bats were alive tonight for the most part. Michael Conforto started the game off with a double and was able to come around and score to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Juan Lagares, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Neil Walker chipped in with solo shots in the second and third innings.
Jay Bruce tacked on with a RBI in the top of the eighth on a groundout to Gallo giving the Mets their fifth run of the game.
In the top of the ninth inning, Wilmer Flores started the Mets off with a single. Curtis Granderson followed by crushing his fifth home run of the season to cut the lead to 10-7. Travis d’Arnaud went back to back with his sixth home run of the season. Juan Lagares singled and Michael Conforto walked to put two more runners on still with nobody out. Unfortunately, Asdrubal Cabrera struck out and Bruce hit into a game-ending double play.
Notes:
This is now the seventh game this season the Mets have given up 10 runs or more.
deGrom’s 4.75 ERA is now the worst at the conclusion of any game in his entire career.
The Mets were able to bang out 17 hits in the loss.
On Deck:
The Mets will play their second game of a two-game set with the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington tomorrow evening. The game has a start time of 8:05 PM. Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.72 ERA), will look to get the Mets back on track against Yu Darvish (5-4, 3.13 ERA).
