The New York Mets (49-59) were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers (78-32) 7-4 in a Saturday matinee at Citi Field.

Pitching

Seth Lugo pitched for the Mets today and started off red-hot at he didn’t allow a hit through his first 4 2/3 innings. Yasmani Grandal broke it up with a double. Lugo struggled in the sixth and would give back the Mets 3-0 lead as he allowed a solo-home run to Chris Taylor and a two-run homer to Cody Bellinger to tie the game. Lugo did not finish the inning and his final stat-line read as follows: 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO.

Paul Sewald struggled through the course of his entire outing and give up a solo-home run to Yasiel Puig in the seventh inning and later another to Justin Turner. Jerry Blevins replaced him and got the first two outs and was then replaced by Fernando Salas.

Salas gave up a two-run homer to Cory Seager to extend the lead to 7-3 at the time.

Hitting

The Mets came out strong against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, Rich Hill, as Michael Conforto lead off the game with a home run. After recording the next two outs, Hill gave up back-to-back homers to Wilmer Flores and Curtis Granderson.

The Mets struggled the rest of the way and allowed Hill to get into a groove as he struck out eight Mets over his five innings of work.

The Mets could not hit the bullpen either as they only had three hits after the first inning, including a Rene Rivera solo-shot in the ninth inning. The Mets struck out 13 times during the course of the game.

Amed Rosario had his first hitless game of his career and struck out twice as well. Rene Rivera was the only person in the lineup to get two hits.

On Deck

The Mets will send Steven Matz (2-4, 5.50 ERA) to the mound to face Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-6, 3.83 ERA) of the Los Angeles Dodgers to try to avoid the sweep. This Sunday Night Baseball contest will start at 8 P.M. and be aired on ESPN.
