The Mets dropped the second game of this series with the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler (3-6, 4.86 ERA) pitched well despite suffering the loss. He allowed two runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out five over 6.0 innings.

Fernando Salas struggled in the seventh as he wasn’t able to get out of the inning. He allowed a run on two hits and walked two before being pulled.

Erik Goeddel stranded three runners in the seventh with a big strike out of the one batter he faced, Yadier Molina.

Rafael Montero allowed a run on an RBI double in the eighth. After Montero was pulled, Josh Edgin came in and walked the only batter he faced. Neil Ramirez was able to strand the runners as he struck out the only batter he faced.

Hitting

Jay Bruce accounted for the Mets only run of the game by smacking his 23rd home run of the season. He also picked up a bloop single in the ninth.

T.J. Rivera picked up three hits on the day, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Rivera is hitting .438 with two home runs and six RBI’s in that span.

Jose Reyes stayed hot by picking up a pair of hits. Reyes has now lifted his averaged up to .218 and is hitting .428 over his last ten games.

Up Next

The Mets send Steven Matz (2-2, 2.12 ERA) to the mound for the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon. Matz looks to continue his string of strong performances, as he will be opposed by RHP Lance Lynn (6-6, 3.87 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 PM at Busch Stadium.
