Jose Reyes wasted no time using his speed to get the Mets on the board early in this rain soaked 1-0 win that saw the Mets sweep the Braves. It was the fourth straight victory for the Mets and sixth of their last seven.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey started and it was clear right from the start that he didn’t have anything working. He wasn’t sharp, couldn’t locate his pitches and found himself in trough all five innings he pitched. Still, I came away entirely impressed with his performance. The sign of a great pitcher is is winning even when you don’t have your “A” game.

Pelfrey battled all night long and when he absolutely needed to execute a pitch to keep the Braves off the board, he did. The 26-year old threw 106 pitches, allowed five hits, struck out three and walked five batters. Pelfrey is now 4-0 and leads the National League with a 0.69 ERA. By the way, the umpire was squeezing Pelfrey all night and had one of the smallest strike zones I’ve seen all season. Those damned umps!

Jose Reyes was the offensive story of the game for the Mets. The only run of the game scored when he singled to left, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored after a throwing error by Chipper Jones. Larry has shown his age throughout the series, and the former Mets nemesis is now a shell of his former self.

Luis Castillo went 2-for-3, and was the only batter with a multiple hits. David Wright continues to struggle and is now hitting .222., and Ike Davis went 0-2 with a couple of strikeouts.

The win secured the sweep, the Mets first of the season, and gave the Mets their sixth win in seven games. It also gave the bullpen who has logged  more innings than any other MLB team, a well deserved rest.

Hey… Did I mention that the Mets swept the Braves and moved into second place one game over .500!!!

Turning Point

The rain was a factor all night, but when the game was paused in the sixth, it sealed the victory for the Mets when the game was called an hour later.

Game Ball

Jose Reyes scored the game’s only run after stealing second and racing home after Chipper’s error.
