Prince Fielder has finally found a new home and it’s one that he is very familiar should be familiar with. The all-star first baseman has signed a nine year, $214MM contract to play for the Detroit Tigers, where he once roamed around by his father’s side as a 12-year old.
The contract is the fourth largest deal in baseball history in terms of total dollars behind Alex Rodriguez’s two historic deals and Albert Pujols’ mega-deal with the Angels last month.
Fielder’s contract will pay him an average annual value of $23.78MM which he will receive until he is 36 years old.
Fielder is expected to play first base which will mean more DH time for Miguel Cabrera and possibly some games at his former position, third base.
The former Brewers slugger batted .299 with a .566 slugging percentage last season and has averaged 37 homers and 106 RBI the last six years. He has also finished in the top five in MVP balloting three times in the past five seasons.
