When the Mets were swept by the Miami Marlins two weeks ago, it looked like they had hit rock bottom. Now coming off a 2-5 road trip, in which they suffered two brutal late-game meltdowns, and New York has hit a new low.
While the team did not play well on the West Coast trip, there was still some great performances by individual players. Dominic Smith began to make starts in left field and thrived in that role, meanwhile Jason Vargas made his best start of the season.
Pitcher of the Week – Jason Vargas
The Mets pitching was awful last week. Of the pitchers who appeared for the Mets, Wilmer Font and Seth Lugo were the only ones that did not allow a single run. Along with Font and Lugo, Jason Vargas and Jacob deGrom were the only pitchers who did not feature an ERA of 4.50 or higher during that stretch.
Vargas ultimately deserves recognition for being the pitcher of the week, as he had the best start by any Mets pitcher. Vargas took the mound on Thursday, on the heels of the Mets disastrous loss where they blew an 8-3 lead to the Dodgers Wednesday night.
The bullpen was completely taxed, with Edwin Diaz, Robert Gsellman and Jeurys Familia all being unavailable to pitch and Vargas had not made it out of the six inning all year. With his team in desperate need of length, Vargas turned in maybe his best start as a Mets, throwing seven strong innings.
Vargas’ final line looked like this: 7 IP, 6 H, ER, 3 BB and 6 K
Vargas ended up being handed a rough loss though, as Hyun-Jin Ryu and Kenley Jansen combined to shutout the Mets.
Honorable Mention: Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom turned in two solid efforts in his starts this week, but the bullpen yielded a combined 12 runs behind him as the Mets lost both games. Still deGrom’s weekly stats were as follows: 11.2 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 2 BB and 9 K.

Player of the Week – Dominic Smith
After weeks of campaigning to get some playing time in left field, Dominic Smith was inserted into the starting lineup last Wednesday and he did not disappoint. Smith 3-for-5, scored three runs and hit a home run in his first start in left field in 2019. He would get three starts this week and appeared in six of the seven games the Mets played.
Smith stats over the past week:
.438/.500/.813, 7 H, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 5 R, 2 BB and 4 K
With that kind of production, Smith deserves to get more playing time in left field as the season progresses. It is a small sample size, as Smith still doesn’t have 100 at-bats, but Dom has the highest OPS on the team at 1.038.
Honorable Mention: Todd Frazier
Dating back to May 15th, Todd Frazier has seen his average climb 100 points as he is now hitting .250 on the season. This week was another productive one for Frazier, as he has been the Mets most consistent hitter as of late.
Frazier’s stats over the past week:
.360/.448/.660, 9 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 7 R, 4 BB and 5 K
With his always strong defense at third base, Frazier’s hot streak is sure to keep him in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future.
