The New York Mets are red-hot right now, winning 10 of their last 12 games and surging back into Wild Card contention. New York is brimming with confidence after Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard stayed put at the deadline and Marcus Stroman was added to give the rotation and this team newfound life.

Over the past week the Mets only lost one game, on Friday night, sweeping the Chicago White Sox amidst the trade deadline drama and beating the Pirates over the weekend. Syndergaard had two excellent starts, bookending the week, meanwhile Jeff McNeil discovered his power stroke with three home runs. Now the Mets sit just a game under .500 at 55-56 and are just three games out of the second Wild Card spot in the NL.

Hitter of the Week – Jeff McNeil

The Mets newest puppy owner had himself a great week at the plate, collecting five extra-base hits as he found his power stroke. Jeff McNeil’s biggest hit of the week came Saturday, in a night where he was not even originally in the lineup. With the Mets down 3-1 in the seventh inning, McNeil came in as a pinch hitter and ripped the first pitch he saw out of PNC Park to cut the Pirates lead to one.

That home run was the first run of six that the Mets scored in the last three innings of the game, as they came back to beat the Pirates. McNeil also collected another hit that night, picking up the rare multi-hit game off the bench and scored another run. He also finished off a 13-run game by the Mets on Sunday with yet another longball.

McNeil’s stats this past week: .333/.429/.792, 8 H, 9 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 1.220 OPS

Pitcher of the Week – Noah Syndergaard

Coming into the week, it seemed like there was a very good chance that this could Noah Syndergaard’s last in a Mets uniform. In the end, the Mets did not receive the incredible haul that they were searching for and instead decided to hang on to Syndergaard and go for it this year. It is still early in this playoff race, but it appears that the Mets made the right call in hanging onto Noah, as he figures to be a huge contributor to this postseason push.

In his first start this week, amid the ever-present trade rumors, Syndergaard was brilliant against the Chicago White Sox. He blanked Chicago across 7 1/3 innings pitched and struck out 11 batters, while only walking one batter. Syndergaard did not end up picking up a win in that start, as the Mets won in extras, but he did pick up a victory on Sunday. With ample run support at his disposal, Syndergaard pitched to contact and allowed just one hit across his first six innings pitched. Thor ultimately yielded a pair of hits and a run in the seventh inning, but finished out the frame and collected his eighth win of the season.

Syndergaard’s stats this past week: 14.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R (1 ER), 14 K, 2 BB

Syndergaard has found his stride at the right time, pitching to a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts with 39 strikeouts across 35 1/3 innings pitched.
