After beginning last week by getting swept in a quick two-game series against Houston, the Mets bounced back by taking two of three from Texas. In a seesaw week against teams from the Lone Star State, two players emerged as the Mets heroes of the week. Eduardo Escobar homered in all three games against Texas, while Edwin Díaz pitched 2 2/3 shutout frames, including two saves against the Rangers.

Hitter of the Week: Eduardo Escobar

After beginning the week going 0-for-3 with a strikeout versus Houston, things did not look promising for Eduardo Escobar.

Despite hitting just three home runs in all of June, he put up one of the best three-game stretches of any Met this year in the series against Texas. Escobar began the series with a three-run home run that gave the Mets the lead for good in the fourth inning. A multi-hit Saturday saw Escobar belt another home run, this time a solo shot. I

n the series finale, Escobar hit yet another long ball, a two-run blast that would give the Mets some insurance before Edwin Díaz came in for the save. Escobar ended the week with six RBIs and a 1.262 OPS.

Pitcher of the Week: Edwin Díaz

In a week where no Mets starting pitchers really set themselves apart from the pack, closer–and likely NL All-Star–Edwin Díaz picks up Player of the Week honors for his dominant appearances last week.

He pitched three times–once against Houston and twice against Texas–and allowed just two hits, one walk and no runs. Although he did hit a batter as well, Díaz struck out six hitters. In fact, he struck out multiple batters in all three of his relief appearances on the week. After Sunday’s save, Díaz’s season ERA is down to a minuscule 1.95.

He recently won NL Reliever of the Month for June after allowing just one earned run all month in 9 2/3 innings, striking out a ridiculous 21 batters in that span.
