The New York Mets started off their season on the right foot, taking two out of three from the rival Washington Nationals. The team had some strong performances from a number of players but two stood out above the rest.
Jacob deGrom and Pete Alonso were vital to the Metropolitans season opening series win over a team who they are sure to battle for the pennant in 2019.
Pitcher of the Week – Jacob deGrom
The reigning 2018 National League CY Young winner picked off where he left off with another impressive quality start. His line from his first start of 2019:
1 G, 1-0, 6 IP, 5H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, .227 AVG, 1.oo WHIP
Thursday’s season opener was the 25th consecutive quality start for the righty, tying him for the second longest streak in MLB history. Bob Gibson holds the record with 26. This was also Jacob’s 30th consecutive start with allowing three runs or less, a new major league record.
DeGrom looks to be locked in for another big season after dominating the Nats and out-dueling Max Scherzer.

Hitter of the Week – Pete Alonso
The Mets first baseman earned his way onto the roster with a strong spring and showed glimpses in his first few games of why he deserves to be on the major league roster. His full stat line:
.500 AVG, 12 AB, 6 H, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 3K
Alonso could not have asked for a better start to his major league career as he put together a tremendous first series in D.C. The power hitting first baseman showed his ability to collect some key hits against one of the toughest pitching staffs in the National League.
Pete is out to prove that his minor league numbers were no joke as he looks to carry over his impressive offensive prowess to the major league level.
