The New York Mets played two seperate three-game series against both the Cardinals and Padres, respectively, this week. They lost the series to the Cardinals two out of three games, while winning two out of three games against the Padres to give them the series win.

Yoenis Cespedes and Jacob deGrom both were vital to the production of the Mets this week, and they are our Players of the Week.

Hitter of the Week – Yoenis Cespedes

Yoenis Cespedes showed off his power blasting two home runs this week, while also driving in seven runs in 21 at-bats. His full stat line:

.429 AVG, 21 AB, 8 H, 2 2B, @HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 6K, 2 SB

One important thing to point out about Cespedes’s stat line is his two stolen bases, both of which came yesterday against the Padres. His ability to take both bases led to Adrian Gonzalez driving him and Bruce in to really get the ball rolling. This would turn into an eventual collapse by the Padres, leading to a 14-2 win for the Mets.

Stolen bases, as well as other small but important factors in the outcome of a game, seem to be what the Mets are always missing. In those tight games where you need a double play that they just can’t turn, they seem to always fall short. However, Cespedes’ base stealing helped the Mets get the ball rolling yesterday, and we hope to see the team start incorporating the little things.

Cespedes had a solid week, especially factoring in his slump to start the season. Hopefully him and Bruce, who was also a nominee for player of the week, can heat up to get the Mets on another winning streak.

Pitcher of the Week – Jacob deGrom

Jacob deGrom did the same thing this week that he’s done his whole career. Although he only pitched one game, it was a huge win for the Mets in which he performed lights out. His line:

1 G, 1-0,  7.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, .208 AVG, 1.09 WHIP

Another unbelievable night for deGrom, and he really kept the Padres at bay. The most suprising thing about this start? The Mets were finally able to pull out the victory, and get him the win. After a season of great starts, some with no win to show for it, it probably feels pretty good.

There really isn’t much more to say.

His stuff was electric as it always was, and if he keeps it up for the rest of the year, he’ll be looking at some stellar numbers.

deGrom and Syndergaard seem to be two pieces of this rotation that are pretty consistent. It is very important for the rest of the rotation to figure themselves out, because the pressure must really weigh on these two aces when they take the mound.
